C1 – Introduction to Digital Photography

In this course, students are taught the very basics of the digital camera.  After we learn about the camera itself, we learn about the different styles of lenses that are offered for digital cameras.  We then focus on other accessories used in digital photography including flash, tripod, monopod, filters, memory cards, chargers, batteries, etc…
After we get a good grasp of all of the gear used in digital photography, we focus our attention on basic principles and shooting techniques.  We will study aperture, ISO, shutter speed, histograms, metering, and white balance.  We will then learn principles such as the triangle of exposure, rule of thirds, leading lines, and directional subjects.

Date: December 7, 2019

C2 – Intermediate Digital Photography

In this course, we take all that we learned in the Introduction to Digital Photography course and apply it to the next level of digital photography.  We will cover depth of field, close up techniques, composition, lens compression, in-depth camera settings, and what we like to see in our images.  We will start to talk about body postures of animals and head angles.  Related to landscape photography we learn how to choose focal points, settings, and the use of filters and their benefits.
If you are wanting to start on the Intermediate level, be sure to read the course description for the Introductory course.  If you feel that you have an excellent grasp of everything that we cover in that course, then you may start with the Intermediate course.

C3 – Advanced Digital Photography

In this course, we will learn the things that took me decades to learn. We will study how critical it is to choose the correct camera and lens for each case scenario. We will learn how to be prepared in advance for a photography excursion. We cover resources available to you the photographer. We will also cover how to approach wildlife, what to do to appear non-aggressive, what not to do, and many other choices that confront you in the field. This course is designed to make you more successful in wildlife and nature photography.
If you already have a really good grasp of all the things we cover in the Introductory and Intermediate courses, you may start at this level in the series. With that in mind, I cannot attempt to teach you any of the previous course topics during this course. This is only for those students who already know how to handle their digital camera inside and out.

C4 – Advanced Wildlife Photography Tour

In this course, we take everything we know and have learned about digital photography through my series of courses and apply them on a guided photography excursion in Cades Cove. We will focus on birds (including turkey), deer, and bear. Any other wildlife opportunities will also be considered as a challenge and learning experience. We may choose a few easy subjects and take turns approaching and photographing that subject. This whole class is a hands-on teaching process. We will repeat the techniques of finding wildlife, approaching the subject, angles and composition, and attempting to leave a subject just as we found it after successfully photographing.
We will be carpooling for this guided tour, and will stay in a tight group during shooting. No exceptions to this.
Maximum enrollment: 10
Fee: $195
Date: TBD
Time: 7 am ~ 11 am, 3 pm ~ 7 pm
Location:  Cades Cove Gallery

C5 – Advanced Landscape Photography Tour

In this course, we take everything we know and have learned about digital photography through my series of courses and apply them on a guided photography excursion in Cades Cove. We will focus on controlling depth of field to create the desired effect for each landscape scenario. This will include shallow depth of field for macro and close-up photos as well as a large depth of field for meadows with mountain backgrounds and everything in between. We will practice softening the water at a waterfall. We will, also, work at creating better landscape compositions through the use of natural framing, color bokeh, subject selection, and backlighting. This whole class is a hands-on teaching process.
We will be carpooling for this guided tour, and will stay in a tight group during shooting. No exceptions to this.
Maximum enrollment: 10
Fee: $195
Date: TBD
